The baseline for any international traveler. The critical underused feature: offline area download. Profile icon → Offline Maps → Select Your Own Map → download your destination city. This offline navigation works excellently in most urban and many rural areas without any data connection. Also invaluable for searching restaurants by current opening hours, comparing walking vs. transit times, and reviews that are often more honest than TripAdvisor.
Maps.me — The Offline Backup
Uses OpenStreetMap data with exceptional coverage in areas where Google Maps has gaps — rural Southeast Asia, North Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia. Download entire country maps for free. Indispensable in Morocco, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and Albania where Google Maps becomes sparse outside major cities.
Citymapper — Urban Transit Navigation
For navigating urban transit (metro, bus, tram, ferry) in supported cities, Citymapper is significantly better than Google Maps. Shows real-time departures, platform numbers, which carriage to board for the right exit, and live disruption info. Wise — Fee-Free International Banking

Revolut — Strong European Option
